Answer · Leaving Germany
Do I need to deregister when I leave Germany?
Yes, if you give up your German home and move abroad. Deregistration (Abmeldung) is a legal obligation and is normally done within two weeks of moving out. The certificate you receive is what ends the broadcasting contribution, closes contracts cleanly and proves when your residence in Germany ended.

At a glance
- Required when
- You give up your German home and move abroad
- Deadline
- Normally within two weeks of moving out (§ 17 BMG)
- Not required when
- Moving within Germany — you re-register instead
- You receive
- An Abmeldebescheinigung (deregistration certificate)
- Keep it
- Insurers, the broadcasting service and banks may ask for it
What the certificate unlocks
- Ending the broadcasting contribution for your home from the right date.
- Terminating insurance, utilities and mobile contracts that require proof of moving abroad.
- Showing tax authorities when your unlimited tax liability in Germany ended.
- Evidence of your residence period if you later apply for a pension or return to Germany.
The rest of the leaving list
- Give notice on the rental contract within the contractual period and agree the handover.
- Close or convert the bank account only after the last direct debits have cleared.
- Set up postal forwarding to an address where you can still receive German letters.
- Tell the immigration office if you hold a residence title, and ask what a long absence means for it.
- Keep your pension insurance number and records — contributions do not disappear when you leave.
- File a final tax return for your last German year if one is required.
If you might come back
Deregistering suggests a departure rather than a temporary trip, which matters if you hold a residence title. If the move might be temporary, speak to the immigration office before deregistering and ask what preserves your title.
Common mistakes
- Leaving without deregistering and continuing to be billed for the broadcasting contribution.
- Closing the bank account before the last debits and any tax refund have gone through.
- Deregistering without asking what it means for an existing residence permit.
What happens next
- You receive the deregistration certificate, usually immediately or by post.
- You use it to end address-linked obligations from the correct date.
- Any final tax assessment or refund is settled against the address you left for post.

Related questions
- Can I deregister after I have already left?
- Many municipalities accept a written or online deregistration from abroad. Contact your former registration office and give the actual move-out date.
- Does deregistration end my health insurance?
- Not by itself. You cancel the insurance separately, and the insurer usually asks for proof that you moved abroad.
- What if I keep a flat in Germany?
- Then you are not fully deregistering. Keeping a home means keeping a registered residence, with the obligations that come with it.
