Answer · Anmeldung and address registration

How long does Anmeldung take in Germany?

The appointment itself is short — usually 10 to 20 minutes — and you normally walk out with your registration certificate the same day. The part that takes time is getting an appointment, which ranges from a few days to several weeks depending on the city and the season. The legal deadline to register is two weeks after moving in.

Why the wait is about appointments, not processing

Registration is not an application that gets reviewed. The clerk checks your ID and your landlord confirmation, enters your address in the register, and prints the certificate. There is no decision to wait for.

What varies is capacity. Each municipality runs its own appointment system, and in larger cities free slots can be booked out for weeks. Booking early is the single thing that shortens the process.

If no appointment is free before the deadline

  • Book the earliest slot you can get and keep the confirmation — it shows you tried to register in time.
  • Check neighbouring district offices: in many cities you may register at any Bürgeramt, not only the one for your street.
  • Look for walk-in or short-notice slots, which are often released early in the morning.
  • Registering slightly late is usually treated as a minor administrative matter rather than a problem with your residence status, but do not leave it open-ended.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until all other paperwork is ready before booking the appointment.
  • Arriving without the signed landlord confirmation, which means a second appointment.
  • Assuming the two-week deadline starts when you arrive in Germany — it starts when you move into the home.

What happens next

  • You receive the Meldebescheinigung, which banks, insurers and employers ask for.
  • Your tax ID is sent to your registered address automatically, by post.
  • The broadcasting fee service and, where relevant, the immigration office receive your address from the register.

Related questions

Can I register on the same day I move in?
Yes, if you already have the signed landlord confirmation. There is no minimum waiting period after moving in.
Is the registration certificate issued immediately?
In most municipalities yes, at the counter. Some issue it by post instead, which adds a few days.
Does a late registration affect my residence permit?
Late registration is handled under registration law, not residence law. It can still delay things that depend on it, such as your tax ID or a bank account, so register as soon as you can.
