German bureaucracy glossary
German administrative letters use a small set of recurring terms, and most confusion comes from a handful of them — the documents you must produce, the offices that produce them, and the words that signal a deadline. This glossary covers the terms newcomers meet in their first year, grouped by where they appear.

Words that signal a deadline

- Widerspruch — a formal objection, usually possible within a stated period.
- Bescheid — a formal decision, which normally starts an objection period.
- unverzüglich — without undue delay, meaning act immediately.
- Nachweis — evidence you have to supply, often with a date attached.
- Zustellung — formal delivery, from which a deadline is counted.
Terms about documents themselves

- Beglaubigte Übersetzung — a certified translation by a sworn translator.
- Apostille — international certification of a public document.
- Original — the original document, which some offices insist on seeing.

Related questions
- Do I need certified translations of everything?
- No. Certification is usually required for foreign civil-status documents such as birth and marriage certificates, and sometimes for qualifications. Ask the specific office what form they accept.
- Why do letters ask for Originale?
- Some offices verify the physical document. Bring originals to appointments and keep certified copies for anything you have to send.
- What if I do not understand a letter at all?
- Identify the sender and the deadline first, then seek help. Missing a deadline is harder to fix than misunderstanding a paragraph.
